About Miles Atkins

Miles Atkins was born in Tampa, Florida and attended Plant High School, where he was student body president and graduated in 1981. He attended Auburn University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science.

Atkins began his career in sales & marketing in Tampa and was recruited to Charlotte in 1989 to work in the print and graphic communications industry. He has since worked in key business development, sales & product marketing, and market development services. Currently, Atkins serves as Director of Corporate Affairs & Government Relations for Iredell Health System.

In 2007, Miles was elected to serve as a Commissioner-At-Large for the Town of Mooresville and in 2011; Miles was elected as Mayor of Mooresville. Since being elected, Miles has gained the reputation of being;

  • listening, engaging and passionate about public service
  • compassionate about individual needs; works to connect the right people/services to address needs
  • willing to stand up for what he believes in
  • committed to efficiency in government
  • making educated and informed policy decisions
  • fiscally conservative
  • a champion for citizens and helping them find their voice in government

Currently, Mayor Atkins serves on various elected boards and appointed positions including:

  • U.S. Conference of Mayors, Member
  • NC Metropolitan Mayors Coalition, Executive Committee & Liaison for the NC Downtown Development Association
  • Regional Conference of Mayors of the Central Carolinas, Advisory Board
  • Centralina Council of Governments Economic Development Commission, Board of Directors Treasurer/Secretary and the CONNECT Housing Work Group
  • Iredell County Mayors Association

Since taking office as mayor, Miles has been instrumental in ensuring all citizens have a voice in their town government by establishing and engaging the following:

  • Mayor’s Council for Individuals with Disabilities
  • Mayor’s Senior Roundtable
  • Mooresville Youth Council

Miles and his wife Kim married in 1995 and relocated to Mooresville in 1997 to start their family. They have a daughter, Rett (14), and a son, Liam (12). Both children are students in the Mooresville Graded School District.
